Course Description: This class emphasizes the writing processes of invention, arrangement, and style, and requires students to write genres such as the profile, proposal, evaluation, and position paper. The primary theme for the class is leadership.

 

Course Objectives: Students should learn to communicate effectively in variety of contexts and genres (GE Outcome #1). Students should learn to integrate knowledge and ideas in a coherent and meaningful manner (GE Outcome #6).

Ozeki, Ruth, All Over Creation, Penquin, 2003 (AOC).

Lambrecht, Bill, Dinner at the New Gene CafŽ, Thomas Dunn Books, 2001 (DNGC).

 

Assignments and Grading:

á         Homework/In-Class Writing: 100 points

á         Analysis Pattern Paragraph: 50 points

á         Summary Paragraph: 50 points

á         Springboard Essay: 100

á         Evaluation: 125 points (both drafts required)

á         Proposal: 125 points (both drafts required)

á         Profile: 125 points (both drafts required)

á         Position Statement: 125 points (both drafts required)

á         Oral Report/Debate: 100 points

á         Complete Portfolio required: 100 points

 

First drafts are graded on completeness and effort; final drafts on quality.

 

Grades;

A= 93-100 points; B=840-929; points C=700-839 points;  D=600-699 points

 

Policies: All papers must be submitted on time. If you have an emergency that keeps you from submitting papers on time, contact me. Otherwise, late papers will be marked of for being late. To get points for the first drafts of paper, students must be in class and participate in peer review.

This class conforms the Deparment of English Policy on Class Attendance: In compliance with NDSU University Senate Policy, Section 333: Class Attendance and Policy and Procedure, located at http://www.ndsu.nodak.edu/policy/333.htm, the English Department has established the following attendance policy. All English Department courses require active learning. Students are expected to speak, listen, and contribute. Therefore, prompt, regular attendance is required. Students who miss more than four weeks of class during the standard academic semester (e.g. twelve 50 minute classes, eight 75 minute classes, or their equivalent) will not pass the course. Moreover, each student is accountable for all work missed because of absence, and instructors have no obligation to make special arrangements for missed work. Additional attendance requirements may be implemented at the discretion of the individual instructor. I deduct 3 points for each unexcused  absence.

All papers, except in-class papers, are to be submitted to me as email attachments using this address:  dr.sullivan@sullivanfiles.net. Your email subject line must have engl 120 in it along with an indication of which paper you are sending.
