SUBJECT: Permission Proposal for Tech Writing Major Project
DATE: June 22, 1984

This is a request for permission to complete and submit a
major technical writing project to fulfill that requirement for
your Technical Writing class.

The proposed project will be a preliminary study designed to
precede a feasibility study for a company producing electronic
and computer equipment. I will be writing the paper as a
technician in the product development division of the company.
The paper would be read by the supervisor of the division and
sent on to other management personnel. The findings and
recommendations of the paper would be studied. If warranted,
a feasibility study would then be initiated to further examine
the possibilities of implementing the paper's recommendations.

The subject of the project is liquid crystal display
technology. Aspects to be examined include current technology
and applications, current research and possible applications for
that research, and problems or disadvantages of LCD use. Some
attention will also be given to future market opportunities and
the anticipated business reaction to those opportunities.
Technical aspects will be limited as some upper management
readers would not be versed in technical terms and concepts.

Liquid crystal displays are on the verge of widely expanded
use. In some product areas, competition will dictate their use.
For other products, LCD use will be optional depending on the
product use and how the LCD can be incorporated into the product.
To remain competitive, companies will need to determine what
types of products and uses are best suited to LCD technology.

This report will outline possible options for LCD use in the
computer electronics industry and some possible consequences of
taking or not taking those options. Sections of the report will
examine current technology, current computer electronics use of
LCDs, future technological expectations for LCDs and the business
climate in meeting those expectations. Specific recommendations
for future action by the company will conclude the paper.

Information for this paper will be derived from available
articles in magazines, newspapers, and business and technical
journals. If possible, interviews with business people will also
be used.

The completed paper will be submitted July 23. A progress
report will be submitted July 9. The paper will exceed ten pages
and will be typed using double spacing.

This project will provide experience in preparing a paper of
the technical type that would be used in business. Because of
the increasing importance and use of liquid crystal displays,
this subject has direct bearing on my study of computer
electronics and should be of future use to me.
