My name is Dale Sullivan. I am the head of the English department at NDSU and have been teaching writing in colleges and universities for 28 years. I have revised this class over break, so that it no longer follows a day-by-day set of lessons. Instead, I require four assignments and then ask you to select from a menu of possible assignments to fill out the rest of the course. Please read the syllabus and assignments carefully.
*Do this: To let me know that you are in the class and starting on the work, please send me an email at dale.sullivan@ndsu.edu and introduce yourself. Also tell me that you are beginning to work on the first required assignment, which is due the beginning of the second week of class.
Besides emailing me, go to the discussion board on this class's BlackBoard site and introduce yourself to your classmates.
If you are interested in working on a team project with someone, you should let the class know in this initial post. I do allow students to team up on three of the assignments if they want: the organization package, the report on discourse in your field research project, or the analysis of the North Dakota GM wheat case (but you don't have to be in a team to do these assignments). It is best to make arrangements for team work before the first assignment comes in. For a team to be approved, I must receive an email from all members of the team verifying that they are willing to accept the team grade for this project, that they have contracted to work together on the project, that they have agreed to the time frame specified by the team, the division of labor specified by the team, and the general parameters established by negotiation with the team members. These emails must have a contract drawn up among the team members for the project, and it must be the same contract from each of the members. The contract should address the issues mentioned in the previous sentences. Teams should be no larger than four; teams of two are manageable in an online course.
This class requires careful reading. I have tried to be as clear as possible in describing my expectations, but you are the user-testers of this newly revised class. If something is unclear, please email me with a specific question. I will answer you by email, but I will probably also post the question and answer on the discussion board.
